The Covidien S100700 Step™ Short Radially Expandable Sleeve is engineered to provide minimally invasive access in laparoscopic or endoscopic procedures with reduced tissue trauma. Unlike conventional trocars that require cutting through layers, the sleeve expands radially, gently dilating the tissue layers rather than slicing them. This design aims to reduce port-site trauma, minimize postoperative pain, and potentially shrink the resulting fascial defect compared to traditional cutting trocars. Because it’s a “short” variant, it’s suited for standard abdominal wall thicknesses without needing extra length.
Integration with the Step™ / VersoStep trocar family enables seamless use: the sleeve is installed over the trocar/dilator assembly, allowing a bladeless insertion path and then serving as the working conduit for instruments. Its bladeless nature (no sharp cutting edge) is intended to offer safer insertion for the surgeon and less risk to surrounding tissues. The radial dilation approach may also minimize bleeding from small vessels encountered in the port track.
