The Story

Medtronic 8225825X NIM Surgeon Control Probe Prass Tip PK/3

• Model: 8225825X
• Tip Type: Prass Tip
• Operating (storage) temperature range is from –29 °C to 60 °C
• Pack of 3

The Medtronic 8225825X Surgeon Control Probe is used in intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring to aid the surgeon in locating, mapping, and testing motor and mixed nerves during surgery. Because it is a monotonic (monopolar) stimulating probe with a Prass tip, it delivers a controlled electrical stimulus with a fine, insulated tip to tissue in order to evoke an electromyographic (EMG) response in muscles innervated by the nerve of interest. The “incrementing” feature allows the surgeon to adjust the stimulus current level while in the field, enabling more precise, responsive nerve testing without needing to change probes or pause the procedure.

In practice, during a surgery (for example in head and neck, thyroid, parotid, skull base, or peripheral nerve procedures), the probe is brought into contact (or near contact) with suspected neural tissue or anatomical nerve pathways. By gradually increasing the stimulus, the surgeon (or neurophysiologist) watches for EMG responses on the monitoring system. A proper response confirms proximity to or continuity of the nerve; absence may indicate the nerve is further away or damaged. Because the probe is insulated except at the tip, the current is focused and shunting (unwanted current leakage) is minimized, enhancing specificity.

Because the 8225825X probe is single‑use and sterile, it is disposed after one procedure, eliminating the need for reprocessing and reducing risk of cross-contamination. It’s part of Medtronic’s NIM accessory line and is used in conjunction with other accessories (EMG electrodes, cables, interface boxes) as part of a full nerve monitoring system. The incrementing control, combined with the Prass tip design, offers surgeons flexibility and responsiveness in stimulation during delicate nerve dissection and mapping, which enhances safety, accuracy, and confidence in preserving neural structures.
