The Mira 506 (Style 506) oval sponge is a silicone implant component used in the surgical technique of scleral buckling to treat rhegmatogenous retinal detachments. Its oval cross-sectional geometry (3 mm × 5 mm) allows it to apply a localized indenting force on the sclera, thereby supporting retinal reattachment by relieving vitreous traction and opposing the retinal break. The softness, elasticity, and biocompatibility of the silicone ensure that it can be molded or trimmed (if necessary) to fit anatomical variations while minimizing irritation or inflammatory response.
In practice, the surgeon places the sponge externally on the episcleral surface, suturing it in place to generate an inward buckle contour. Thanks to its moderate thickness, the 3 × 5 mm dimension offers a balance between sufficient indentation effect and a lower profile to reduce discomfort or prominence. The device’s oval shape is particularly suited to “segmental” buckling where focal support is needed, rather than full encircling. Because it is packaged in sets of five, the device allows for multiple implants or reserve devices during a single surgical session.
Over the long term, the silicone material is generally stable and inert, resisting degradation.
